Northern Supply Base Investments 2015

Northern Automotive Supply Base companies responsible for investments of £22 million and over 341 new jobs during 2015

Investments totalling £22 million were made by Northern automotive supply base and niche vehicle manufacturing companies during 2015. All of the companies are Small & Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

This provides an interesting contrast to a similar survey conducted just one year earlier, relating to 2014, when investments totalling just over £7.5m were made. The latest figures equate to an increase in investment of around 300%.*

In addition, at least 341 jobs were created by automotive SMEs in the Northern region during 2015 – compared to 237 jobs during 2014.

These figures do not include investments by the major vehicle manufacturers in the region, ie. Bentley Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Leyland Trucks and Vauxhall.

Carol Holden OBE, Chief Executive of the Northern Automotive Alliance (NAA), comments: “Automotive supply base and niche vehicle manufacturing companies across the NAA area within the Northern Powerhouse are demonstrating impressive growth and making significant investments. A major opportunity has been identified to grow the UK automotive supply chain, and these latest figures show that the companies working with the Northern Automotive Alliance are growing into larger suppliers – as well as making a significant contribution to the UK economy.”

Examples of investments include:

Colloids Ltd, Merseyside

Manufacturer of high quality masterbatches/concentrates for the global thermoplastics industry

Culimeta-Saveguard Ltd, Manchester

Erlson Precision Components Ltd, Lancashire

High precision, high volume turbocharger component manufacturer

Ionix Advanced Technologies, Leeds

Torotrak Group, Lancashire

Woodall Nicholson Group, Manchester

This level of investment reflects the growth of small and medium-sized automotive supply chain companies working with the Northern Automotive Alliance in the region. There are also additional investments by other members of the NAA.

The Northern Automotive Alliance helps to support and nurture supply chain companies in the region to grow into larger businesses, in order to strengthen the upstream supply chain in the UK.

The NAA is working with the Automotive Investment Organisation (AIO) to help supply chain companies to increase sales to OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, to access finance and to promote trade opportunities.

Lawrence Davies MBE, CEO, UKTI Automotive Investment Organisation, says: “The AIO works with our partners to promote trade opportunities abroad and to drive foreign investment into the UK automotive supply chain. The Northern Automotive Alliance is an excellent example of how to grow the UK’s capability as a leading global automotive centre. SMEs remain central to the industry’s efforts to seize the opportunities for UK-made components, so it is particularly pleasing to see the progress SMEs in the Northern Automotive Alliance have made.”

The NAA is working with automotive suppliers to help them gain maximum benefit from the growth of the UK’s automotive industry, so helping to improve the Northern region’s economy.

* The NAA’s 2015 Supply Base Investment survey covers the enlarged Northern Automotive Alliance Area and more companies responded compared to the 2014 survey.
