NAA Update: Government consultation on phasing out sales of new petrol and diesel cars closes soon

The government’s consultation on phasing out sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, and flexibilities around the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, closes on 18 February, so if you want to respond, time is running out.

Welcome to this month’s newsletter and I hope you are all keeping well.

It’s certainly been a busy start to 2025, both here at NAA and in the wider industry, where we welcomed the launch of the government’s review – published on Christmas Eve – of the end of sale date for cars powered solely by petrol or diesel, as well as possible changes to the flexibilities around the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate. Both are critical issues for a global industry facing significant challenges as it tries to decarbonise ahead of natural market demand. The consultation is open until 18th February and you can respond via this link Phasing out sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 and supporting the ZEV transition – GOV.UK

It continues to be a challenging time for our industry, with UK vehicle production dipping below one million units in 2024, according to the latest figures published last month by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Factories turned out 779,584 cars and 125,649 commercial vehicles (CVs), a total of 905,233 units and -11.8% lower than in 2023. While CV output grew by 4.0%, its best level since 2008, multiple factors impacted car volumes, with the end of production for some long running models as factories retooled for EVs, weakness in key global markets, and a slowdown in the transition to electrification amid tough economic conditions.

On a more positive note, last month, the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) opened its latest Collaborative R&D competition, offering your automotive R&D project the chance to receive up to £20 million in matched-funding to boost your pioneering zero-emission, on-vehicle technology.

The APC has also launched Mobilise 2025, a structured early-stage accelerator programme that supports ambitious micro, small and medium-size enterprises, start-ups or university spin-outs that are developing innovative automotive-related early-stage, zero emission or Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) technologies, products, services or solutions to accelerate the transition to a safer, smarter, more sustainable future.
