Other News: IoT enables businesses to prosper to benefit region
The Lancashire and Cumbria Institute of Technology works with employers to provide the skilled workers industries need – now and in the future.
Known as the IoT, it’s not one place but a collaboration of eight colleges working with businesses to co-create technical training courses. The colleges are Blackpool and the Fylde, Burnley, Nelson and Colne, Preston, Blackburn, Lancaster and Morecambe, Runshaw and Lakes.
Employers tell the IoT about the skills they need in the areas of engineering, manufacturing, automotive, cyber and digital, construction, health and medical, and science. Education and industry then work together to draw up the curriculum.
A government investment of £8.7m spent on equipment has enabled learners to train using industry-standard equipment. Examples include virtual reality IGLOOs, CNC equipment, robot arms, cybersecurity and gaming suites, as well as interactive surgical tables.
It means learners – whether existing or future employees – come out with the skills they need to make an impact.
Businesses can work with the IoT, whether it’s by helping co-create courses, recruiting apprentices or offering student visits and industry placements.
There are also opportunities to take up guest speaking slots, set live projects for students and promote employment opportunities. The IoT enables businesses to prosper so the region benefits.
