NAA Update: British Industry Competitiveness Scheme launched

The launch of the British Industry Competitiveness Scheme offers the potential to cut some of the world’s highest industrial electricity costs and improve the UK’s investment competitiveness.

UK car production proved resilient in March, slipping just ‑0.8% despite supply disruption, weaker export demand and ongoing model changeovers. This stability highlights the sector’s underlying strength at a time of global uncertainty.

The launch of the British Industry Competitiveness Scheme provides welcome momentum, with the potential to cut some of the world’s highest industrial electricity costs and improve the UK’s investment competitiveness.

New SMMT analysis also shows that as manufacturers accelerate electrification, demand for UK‑built components could rise by 80% by 2030 – unlocking a massive £4.6 billion domestic supply chain opportunity – read the full report here Opportunity Auto: Open for Business, Built for Growth – SMMT

However, the EU’s proposed Industrial Accelerator Act, in its current form, risks disadvantaging UK-built vehicles through restrictive ‘Made in Europe’ provisions. Given the UK is the EU’s largest automotive components customer, there is strong mutual interest in amending the Act to treat the UK as a trusted partner. With pragmatic engagement, swift delivery of cost‑reduction measures and continued focus on innovation, the UK automotive sector is well placed to turn recent stability into renewed growth and long‑term competitiveness.
